Bruce Campbell, the youngest of three boys, wanted to be an actor right from the age of 8 after finding his dad’s work very enjoyable at Local Community Theater. He followed his dad‘s acting profession and started performing in Local Community Theatre. At the age of 14, he began his acting career by playing the King in ‘King and I’. He appeared in several more Community theater productions including “South Pacific” and “Sweet Bird of Youth”. Bruce also began making Super-8 movies with his friends just for fun and they guys made 50 movies. He attended Western Michigan University and took theater courses. In 1979, along with Sam Raimi and Pal Rob Tapert, he helped create a Super -8 short film called ‘Within The Woods’. He went to work as a production assistant for a commercial-making firm in Detroit.
“The Evil Dead”(which Bruce co-produced and starred in as “Ash”) was derived from ‘Within The Woods’ became a cult favorite and was the best-selling video in England in 1983. It was sent to the Cannes Film Festival, where it was noticed and complimented by Stephen King. New Line Cinema released the film in the U.S. shortly thereafter. Around this time, he married his first wife, and they had 2 kids.
Next film was ‘Crime Wave’ co-written by Sam Raimi and Joel Coen. After that, Bruce moved to Los Angeles and starred in several movies, such as “Moontrap” and “Maniac Cop”. He met and married his second wife, costume designer Ida Gearon, on the set of “Mindwarp” in 1990.Bruce guest starred on popular TV shows such as ‘Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’ , ‘Hercules : The Legendary Journeys’ , ‘Xena : Warrior Princess’ .
He continues to appear in movies such as “Congo”, “Gold Rush!”, “Escape From L.A.” and “McHale’s Navy”. He has also voiced several CD-Rom adventure games, like “Pitfall 3-D”.
He has directed for shows like “V.I.P.” as well as several others. Bruce’s latest television venture was starring as the title rogue of “Jack of All Trades”. On Burn Notice, he played the role of Sam Axe, a former Navy SEAL skilled in surveillance.
